If you currently have a registered domain name, it would be administered by the domain name Registrar that you first signed up with. When you Transfer your domain to anoter Registrar, that company will make sure that your domain name "works" in terms of connecting to your web site and delivering your e-mails. If you change Registrars, that change is known as a transfer.
